American Indians

The American Indian, or First Peoples, inhabited North America long before the Europeans set foot on this land.  They were our first naturalist, learning to work with nature to sustain their lives.  Although many Indian Nations have completely vanished, they have left their life stories and legacies behind for us to study.

All American Indians cannot be categorized into one group.  Each tribe or nation had its own strengths and weaknesses; its own way of life; its own heroes.  Learning about different nations will enable you to appreciate all they have done for this country.

The American Indians taught the first Europeans important skills to survive in this new land aiding in the growth of the United States

Check out our extensive list of books and crafts that can be added to any study of American Indians.  These books and crafts will help this part of history come alive for your child or children.  Several of the crafts are excellent for co-ops.
